PMG passes audit for Bronze FORS Accreditation against new standard version 4.1

The Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) is a voluntary accreditation scheme that promotes best practice for commercial vehicle operators. With over 4,600 members, FORS is gaining recognition as the transport industry’s go-to accreditation scheme. FORS encompasses all aspects of safety, efficiency, and environmental protection by encouraging and training fleet operators to measure, monitor and improve performance.

FORS Bronze, Silver and Gold membership provides progressive accreditation enabling operators to achieve exemplary levels of best practice. FORS members stand out from the crowd, work to standards above the legal minimum and have access to a wide range of exclusive benefits that provide a real competitive advantage.

Stuart Knight, Operations Manager at PMG, said, “we decided to join the FORS scheme to show customers our continued commitment to high operational standards and procedures. FORS is a great scheme that helps focus the company further on best practices and industry principles and it is our intention to progress further to silver accreditation soon”.

The FORS accreditation helps PMG to strengthen its position as the No 1 provider of operated road sweepers and tankers in the Southwest of England.

PMG Appoints New Workshop Manager

Our new workshop manager Zac Simmons has returned to the job he loves most – looking after municipal hire vehicles.

Zac and his team of three technicians are responsible for keeping PMG Services vehicles in tip top mechanical condition, ready to take on whatever challenge our customers give us!

From starting out with just one sweeper in 1990 The PMG fleet of vacuum tankers, gully tankers and sweepers has grown to 45 with more on the way.

Originally from Northampton, Zac has over 10 years’ experience working for some of the leading contract hire company’s including MHS, Go-Plant and Specialist Fleet Services. He started on the tools working in the workshop looking after local authority contract hire vehicles and worked his way up through the ranks to workshop manager.

He relocated to Bristol in 2014 to be with his wife Lynette and joined Mercedes van dealership City West as service manager before moving on to Sapphire Vehicle Services at Emerson Green. There he managed one of the company’s largest regional workshop operations looking after the Sainsbury’s supermarket fleet.

But Zac’s heart has always been in municipal vehicles, so when he saw the advertisement for the PMG position he jumped at the chance.

He said: “I’m delighted to back in the sector I want to be in, the municipal side of things.  PMG is an growing business with lots of potential and I am really enjoying being part of the team here.  My first priority is to modernise the workshop and put in systems to ensure that we continue to meet the future servicing requirements of the growing PMG fleet.”

Commented operations manager Stuart Knight: “We are delighted that Zac has chosen to join PMG for the next phase of his career. He brings with him a vast amount of knowledge and expertise of working within our sector and I am sure he will have a great deal to contribute to the continued success of our award winning company.”

In his spare time Zac enjoys watching rugby and is a keen Northampton Saints supporter (we won’t hold that against him!) He also enjoys renovating garden machinery and DIY.

Zero waste to landfill from the PMG Services’ recycling facility

Hang on to your hats, fellow sustainability fanatics – we can now proudly boast that none of the road sweeping and gully ‘wastes’ which we collect on a daily basis are going to landfill.

Yes, that’s zero waste to landfill, largely thanks to our recently passing the quality protocol (see my blog last month dated 15th April). We recycle or reuse the entire content, by separating sand, gravel and stones and sending them off to be reused for road surfacing and construction or, in the case of high-grade organic materials, compost or remediation. We also separate any litter which we send for reprocessing, much of which is used to make refuse-derived fuels. We even send the water content off to treatment works to be recycled.

Road sweepings are no longer a waste: as our Quality Protocol for the Production of Aggregates gains approval

We’re thrilled to report the Environment Agency has approved our ‘quality protocol’ for the production of aggregates from our road sweepings/gully waste recycling plant. This means all the waste materials we pick up by our own fleet and process can be reused rather than sent to landfill as we ensure they lose the criteria which class them as ‘waste’.

This is such a win-win-win situation for everyone. To name but three benefits, materials are put to good use instead of being landfilled; they’re cheaper for onward users to buy than ‘virgin’ aggregates; and it helps our clients to meet their sustainability targets.

Jetting drains and sewers: further qualifications

Another week and another important accreditation for PMG Services staff.

Two of our specialist jetting operatives, Shaun McGinn and Steve Parsons, have successfully completed the Water Jetting Association’s Safety Awareness course and its Drain and Sewer Jetting course, accredited by City & Guilds. They each attended practical instruction including bespoke, hands-on training on the safe and effective use of equipment together with theoretical training in a lecture room environment. They also had refresher training on safe entry to, and exit from, confined spaces.

Hot on health and safety: now it’s official

Since joining the company in July last year I’ve been beavering away compiling the seemingly endless volumes of paperwork required to gain accreditation from Safecontractor for our excellence in health and safety.

It’s been a long old haul for something we already knew we were doing right, but now it seems worth all the effort as today we received confirmation that we’ve passed the exacting Safecontractor criteria for our capabilities and standards. Another certificate for the files!

The auditors examined how we avoid and manage risks, how well we train our drivers, operatives and other staff and they crawled over our paper trails to ensure every ‘i’ is dotted and every ‘t’ is crossed.

Swept away … we’ve expanded overnight!

Yesterday morning we had a fleet of 30 vehicles, including four specialist sweepers; by the evening we had welcomed a further five sweepers into our happy family.

It all started when we were approached some months ago by the owners of Roadmasters, a company offering road sweeping and cleaning services. Based at Signal Way in Swindon, Roadmasters was up for sale, allowing its ‘big sister’ company, Rockstone Surfacing, to concentrate on its core business.

Legal Requirements for Tipping Sweeper Waste

Our licensed Transfer facility in St Phillips, Bristol continues to go from strength to strength with a number of high profile customers now taking full advantage of our central location and our Recycling capabilities.

Prior to changes in legislation regarding Sweeper waste, we were exploring our options for recycling all material collected by our fleet.

Following the changes, the legislation states:
  • Under European landfill regulations, liquid waste – Road sweepings on average contains 10% water/ liquid content – can no longer be sent to landfill. In addition to this, all waste must be treated to the legally defined standards before it can be taken to Landfill.
  • Where possible, Road Sweepers must travel to a licensed site in order for waste treatment to take place. To tip sweepings on their own site, Companies must have the appropriate environmental permit and an impermeable surface with controlled drainage before it can tip. The Sweeper must NOT empty near drains, surface water, groundwater or bare ground.
  • All companies have a legal and moral responsibility to dispose of their waste correctly.

PMG Services are licensed as both waste carriers and as a treatment facility, which enables us to provide a complete waste management solution.

Our facility is a simple solution to treating your road sweepings and gully waste and is unaffected by the annual increase of Landfill tax. We are committed to employ best environmental practices by recovering both the liquid and the solid content from all loads discharged on our site. These factors are important to our customers and are why PMG Services are the market leader in the South west of England. We are now in phase 2 of our plans for the facility, with the addition of new technology and we will update you early in 2014 once Phase 2 is completed.

In the meantime, if you have any enquiries regarding rates for tipping or your legal requirements, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
